The Bundelkhand Intermediate, Bundelkhand Upland and Sagar plateau sub-regions are a rich source of granite, sandstone and stones of lower value.
Fortune Stone Ltd, a joint venture with the MP State Mining Corporation, mines 'Jhansi Red' and 'Fortune Red' granites from Katera, Garhi Malhera areas of Chhatarpur district and exports raw blocks mainly to Korea, Indonesia and other Far Eastern countries. Extensive mining of granite also takes place in Lalitpur. Granite polishing units are established in Jhansi, Chhatarpur and Tikamgarh.
Sandstone mined in Panna is relatively easy to cut and polish and finds a ready market in Gulf countries, where it is used for construction of mosques. The stone is also mined extensively in Chitrakoot and Lalitpur. Granite and sandstone cutting and polishing units are established in Panna and Lalitpur.
Mining, cutting or crushing for obtaining construction materials like boulder stones, building stones, granite 'murum' and dust and stone ballast is done in many districts of Bundelkhand. According to data provided in the website of the UP Directorate of Geology, there are 82 stone crushers in Jhansi, 3 in Hamirpur, 81 in Mahoba, 9 in Banda, and 30 in Chitrakoot (the information is not dated; the numbers are probably not current). The crushers are concentrated at a few locations, such as Kabrai in Mahoba, Bharatkoop-Shivrampur in Chitrakoot and near Orchha in Tikamgarh.
Kankar sand ballast is mined in large quantities in Konch, Orai and Kalpi tehsils of Jalaun, for use in manufacture of lime and construction of roads.
There is much scope for expanding Bundelkhand's granite and sandstone industry, but there are many problems associated with this industry.
