The beedi industry is the single largest source of non-agricultural employment in Bundelkhand |
In an under-developed region like Bundelkhand, with a fragile economic base and few livelihood choices, the number of persons employed rather than investment or turnover should be used as criterion for determining 'main' industries.
The table below gives a district-wise listing of main industries in Bundelkhand, in three broad sectors - manufacturing, service sector (other than construction), and mining and quarrying - in terms of main workers employed. As the data in the table shows, the beedi industry is the single largest source of non-agricultural employment in Bundelkhand, especially in Sagar and Damoh districts; in the region as a whole, it employs over 200,000 persons.
Another large employer is the Indian Railways, which directly or indirectly provides employment to over 10,000 people in Jhansi.
Stone quarries are the single largest source of non-agricultural employment in Panna and Mahoba districts. Goods transport is a significant source of employment in all districts. In many districts, 'tailoring' is the most significant manufacturing activity.
