Breakup of Non-agricultural Main Workers

The two tables below show employment sources of non-agricultural main workers (i.e., main workers who are not cultivators or agricultural labourers) in UP and MP Bundelkhand districts, as per Census 2001 group-wise and district-wise data. Note:

• The breakup of main workers is according to their 'main' occupation. In the fishing, forestry and mining sectors, there are many more workers engaged as casual or occasional workers. The mining sector also employs a large number of migrant workers, from other districts or other states. This employment is not reflected in figures below.
• 'Manufacturing' includes manufacturing in household industries, tiny and small scale units, and larger factories.
• 'Construction' includes all activities related to building and other construction.
• 'Financial intermediation' includes working as brokers/agents for financial/insurance products and services.
• 'Public administration' refers to employment in central, state or local government bodies/departments.
• Workers in 'other sectors' (last rows) are mainly engaged as domestic servants.
• 'Education', 'health' and 'social work' includes employment in private sector.
• MP Bundelkhand data related to employment in manufacturing is split between beedi manufacturing and other kinds of manufacturing, as the former accounts for a very high number of workers.

The data in the tables show that:

• Beedi manufacture is the single largest source of non-agricultural employment in Bundelkhand, followed by other manufacturing, trade, construction, public administration (employment in government), education and transport.
• Highest employment in manufacturing (other than beedi) is in Jhansi district.
• Lowest employment in manufacturing is in Chitrakoot and Datia districts.
• Employment in manufacturing (other than beedi) is considerably lower in MP Bundelkhand than in UP Bundelkhand.
• Highest employment in mining and quarrying is in Panna and Lalitpur districts.
• Highest employment in education sector is in Sagar.
• Highest employment in hotels and restaurants is in Chhatarpur (Khajurao).
